Announcing the Recipients of Boomerang’s 2023 Charitable Giving

Posted By on Dec 21, 2023

Happy Holidays!

Here at Boomerang HQ, we are once again fortunate this year to be able to donate a portion of our profits towards charitable causes. This year, we are proud to announce three contributions that we hope will move the world forward.

Funding to advance carbon capture research

Recognizing the urgent need to address climate change, Boomerang has allocated funds for cutting-edge carbon capture research in 2023. Researchers consistently note that there’s a funding gap between “we have an idea” and “we’re ready for a large government or foundation grant” – and that’s the gap that we have focused on in our carbon capture donations for the past few years.

We are excited to support two groundbreaking projects that aim to revolutionize carbon capture technologies.

Selective and Fast Membranes for CO2 Capture

Our first recipient is Prof. Scott Warren from the Department of Chemistry at UNC Chapel Hill. Prof. Warren’s research focuses on developing membranes for capturing CO2 directly from combustion sources. This innovative approach involves constructing a membrane using a material discovered by his research team, containing alternating layers of a 2D material (e.g., graphene or MoS2) and a liquid. This design aims to improve selectivity, rate, and efficiency, potentially leading to a 10-50 fold improvement in membrane performance with reduced energy consumption.

Bioinspired Materials for Oceanic Carbon Capture and Conversion

Our second recipient is Dr. Kyriakos C. Stylianou at Oregon State University, leading a project on bioinspired materials for oceanic carbon capture. The project involves synthesizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on the active site of the enzyme α-carbonic anhydrase. These MOFs, when exposed to UV light, selectively capture oceanic inorganic carbon and convert it into value-added products such as methanol. This innovative approach mimics biological processes and represents a pioneering effort to discover solutions to the climate crisis.

Education for Burmese children

Building on our longstanding commitment to education in Myanmar, Boomerang is proud to support the education of children in Burma through a partnership with Build a School in Burma. Our journey in philanthropy began over 10 years ago when we pledged a portion of our profits to advance education in Myanmar. Fast forward to 2023, and we’re thrilled to continue supporting this impactful work.

We at Baydin are honored to play a role in creating positive change in the world. Our commitment to education and climate action reflects our values and vision for a prosperous future. We once again extend our gratitude to our subscribers and supporters — without you, we wouldn’t be able to do what we love, nor would we be able to give back in this way. As we look ahead, we remain dedicated to creating a lasting impact for many years to come. Thank you for being part of our journey.
